Function of Law in the International Community (not running 2010-2011)

This course on the MPhil (International Relations) degree course examines the manner in which international law operates as a factor in decision-making, as in the distribution of power, on both the national and international levels. Eight seminars consider different topics, chosen for their topicality and the insights that they yield into the practical operation of international law. In recent years seminar topics have included the legality of the invasion of Iraq, legal problems arising from the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay and from irregular rendition, climate change, the protection of foreign investments, differential treatment for developing States, and the strengths and weaknesses of the United Nations Security Council.
